A neighbor told police a man had left the area in a white contractor van, driving over the curb and grass at a high speed. Police said the man left the area heading south on Coolidge Highway.

Police shared that information with surrounding police departments, and a Berkley police officer saw a man who matched the description stealing from another vehicle in the 3300 block of Parker Drive, according to authorities.

Royal Oak police officers set up a perimeter and arrested Michael Allen Shaver as he tried to escape on foot, authorities said.

Police said they recovered four stolen tires and rims from the theft on Belle Court. They also found stolen tools worth more than $2,000 from the theft on Parker Drive, according to officials.

Shaver, 36, is charged with larceny from an automobile and breaking and entering an automobile over $1,000. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison.

Shaver has no previous criminal record, police said. He is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.

He is scheduled to return to 44th District Court on Oct. 18.
