SANTA CALRITA, Calif. – One person was killed and three others were injured in a shooting at a Southern California high school Thursday morning, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to Saugus High School in the city of Santa Clarita about 8 a.m. The school is about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

NBC News reported the shooter had been found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, the sheriff said he is in custody and being treated at a hospital. He was taken into custody about an hour and a half after the shooting was reported at about 8 a.m., according to NBC News.

Video and images showed sheriff’s deputies swarming the school and several people being moved on gurneys.

Lines of students were escorted away from the school by armed deputies. Saugus High School and other schools in the area were locked down. The lockdown at the other schools has been lifted, and law enforcement said there is no more threat to the public. However, Saugus High School remained on lockdown as parents were waiting to be reunited with their children who were still inside the building.

In a tweet, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital said a female died and two males are in critical condition, while another male is in good condition. It was unclear if there were any other injured.

It was originally reported that as many as six people were injured in the shooting.

Suspect in custody

The sheriff’s department said a male suspect in black clothing was seen at the school. KNBC reported deputies surrounded a home about a mile away from the school. The suspect was taken into custody about an hour and a half after the shooting was reported, the sheriff said.

The LA County Sheriff told KNBC that the shooter was a student at the high school and they have verified his identity. He is a 15-year-old boy.
