Crews work to rescue man trapped in trench in backyard of Detroit home

DETROIT – Crews worked to rescue a man who became trapped in a trench in the backyard of a Detroit home Monday.

Fire crews arrived on scene around 4:15 p.m. to a home on University Place, near Harper Avenue and Cadieux Road. Officials said there is a man in a trench that collapsed behind that home.

The man and a crew had been working in that backyard most of Monday. Rescuers are now working to secure the trench and the Trench Rescue Squad is on scene.

“I’m hoping he’s well and has a fast recovery,” a resident said.

“He is conscious and he is talking to us, but this can deteriorate pretty rapidly,” Dave Fornell, Deputy Commissioner with the Detroit Fire Department said.
