ROMULUS, Mich. – A barricaded gunman surrendered Friday after an attempted carjacking and shootout with police near Wayne and Wick roads in Romulus.
Police were responding to an attempted carjacking at a gas station about 4 p.m. when they received a call from a homeowner on Wick Road that someone shot their dog.
The man allegedly broke into a house where one of three dogs attacked him. He shot the dog in the face. The dog did not survive.
Police at the scene saw the man, who was the carjacking suspect. Police exchanged gunfire with the man, hitting him several times, before he went back into the same house with the dogs.
Police said there were two children in the home the shooter barricaded himself inside. The children did not belong to the gunman.
A man ran out of the home with one of the children, a 7-year-old, while a 5-year-old was inside with the man. The gunman eventually let the 5-year-old go before surrendering a short time later. He is in a hospital in serious condition, police said.
