Detroit man describes being shot by neighbor in dispute over fence

Rene Santana accused of shooting Paris Hill

DETROIT – A Detroit man who was shot by his neighbor after a confrontation over a fence being too close to the property line has been released from the hospital, and he spoke with Local 4 about the incident.

Paris Hill is back home after spending several days in the hospital and undergoing two surgeries.

"The doctors said I will walk again, but never be the same," Hill said.

Hill and his neighbor had a disagreement that centered around an incomplete wooden fence that Hill had started to build in his backyard.

Police said Hill's neighbor, Rene Santana, didn't want the fence up, so he pulled out a gun and shot Hill.

"He didn't care what part of the body," Hill said. "With anger, he took aim right at me, you know?"

Hill bled outside his house as his daughter, Lauren, watched.

As Santana sits in jail facing three separate charges, Hill is less worried about his neighbor and more worried about picking up the pieces. He's worried about the trauma his children witnessed.

"I never thought it would end with gun violence," Hill said.
