Drunk driver suspected in crash which killed man, 10-year-old girl at Linwood, Glendale in Detroit

Girl's twin is in critical condition

DETROIT – A man is accused of driving drunk at high speeds and causing a crash Sunday night which killed a 53-year-old man and a 10-year-old girl at Linwood Street and Glendale Avenue in Detroit.

The 30-year-old driver of a Chevrolet Impala is in police custody after his vehicle slammed into the back of a Toyota which was stopping at a red light at about 11:55 p.m. The crash impact sent the Toyota into a pole. The vehicle was wrapped around the pole.

The impact killed the 53-year-old driver of the Toyota and a 10-year-old girl who was sitting in the rear passenger seat of the car.

The girl's twin sister also was in the car and is in critical condition. The girls' 43-year-old aunt was in the car, too. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police said the driver was the boyfriend of the girls' mother.

A third vehicle, a Lincoln sedan, also was involved in the crash. The Impala struck the Lincoln after rear-ending the Toyota. The Impala ended up rolling over. The 42-year-old man driving the Lincoln and his 43-year-old passenger both suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

There was a 24-year-old passenger in the Impala who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The 30-year-old driver suffered minor injuries. He's in police custody now and accused of driving while drunk.

"You knew somebody was in real serious, serious condition," said Parish Flowers, who witnessed the crash. "You could tell just by the magnitude of the force that it hit that pole ... that's sad. It didn't have to be like that, but that's what happens when you speed."
