Empty beer cans spark shooting at Oakland County golf course

Employee fires shots during argument over beer cans

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A relaxing afternoon on the golf course descended into chaos this weekend in Oakland County because of an argument over empty beer cans.

The shooting happened at the Heather Highlands Golf Course on Holly Road in Springfield Township.

There's a sign out front of the Heather Highlands Golf Course that says no alcohol is permitted. That rule was broken Saturday, and it sparked an argument that ended with gunfire.

"I got here this morning and heard that there was a shot," Jim Scharfenkamp, of Troy, said.

Scharfenkamp played the course Monday, which was a quiet day at Heather Highlands.

"The lady inside -- we asked her -- she said there was a shot fired into the ground," Scharfenkamp said.

A 45-year-old man from Grand Blanc who works at the course confronted golfers about empty beer cans, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

The argument escalated, and the employee pulled out a gun. He fired a shot, and possibly two more, police said. Patrons and golfers attacked the employee, trying to disarm him.

Police said the employee was injured during the fight. He was taken to the hospital, and after his release was transported to the Oakland County Jail.

The news of Saturday's shooting didn't rattle Scharfenkamp.

"Well, obviously, guns should be on the rifle range, not on the golf course," Scharfenkamp said.

Scharfenkamp and his friend said they played Monday and plan to play in the future.

"I don't think it's a reflection on this golf course at all," Scharfenkamp said.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said they have a two-count warrant -- one for felonious assault and one for reckless discharge of a firearm. The man's name will be withheld until he's arraigned on Tuesday.

Attorney Steven Freers said the golf course is looking into the matter. He said it doesn't have a firm conclusion yet and is cooperating with police.
