What happened

Three people were killed Wednesday morning when a Chevy Malibu traveling in the wrong direction caused a crash on southbound I-75 at I-94 in Detroit.

Police said the driver of the Malibu -- Leeanna Monic Custard, 34, of New Baltimore and passengers in an Oldsmobile Silhouette that was struck -- Karl Louis Hawkins, 23, of Pontiac, and Elijah Duane Holden, 21, of Auburn Hills -- were killed in the crash.

A 22-year-old Pontiac man and 24-year-old Pontiac man, who were also in the Silhouette, were critically injured.

The southbound side of I-75 was shut down to traffic for hours but has since reopened.

Michigan State Police said the wrong-way driver caused this crash about 3:45 a.m.

Police were advising drivers to avoid the area through the Wednesday morning rush hour, but it's open now.

At least one of the vehicles involved in the crash caught fire.

State police said Custard had been driving a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu that was headed in the wrong direction when her car struck a 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette.

Four people were in the Oldsmobile. Two of them were killed, and two others are hospitalized.

State police are reviewing video of an area in which they believe the driver of the Malibu had been before the crash.
