Traverse City woman arrested after assaulting, demanding money from father of her child

ACME TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 23-year-old woman from Traverse City was arrested over the weekend for assaulting the father of her baby, according to Michigan State Police.

A news release states that Makayla May Phipps became angry with the father of her child as he was dropping off their child on July 23 around 10 p.m.

Police write that Phipps jumped into the back of the victim’s vehicle that was located on Barlett Road and started demanding money while assaulting him. Phipps retrieved a handgun from the victim’s car and threatened the victim to hang up the phone when he was attempting to call 911.

Phipps is being held in Grand Traverse County jail on one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of interfering with electronic communication devices causing injury or death and a count of domestic violence.

The Traverse City woman’s bond is set at $50,000. Phipps’ next court appearance is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m.
