Gov. Whitmer discusses future of abortion battle during one-on-one interview with Local 4

Next battle over abortion access is over the abortion pill

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – Local 4′s Paula Tutman had a chance to sit down with Governor Gretchen Whitmer for an exclusive interview just before she repealed Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban.

They talked about how the battle over abortion rights is still playing out across the country and how that could impact here in Michigan.

Whitmer signed three bills that amounted to the repeal of the 1931 law that banned abortion in Michigan.

She also expressed why getting that law off the books has been so critical.

Whitmer chose the signing in Birmingham Wednesday (April 5), according to her office, because of the belief that Birmingham tends to vote conservative. She wanted a footprint in a community where she believed the tide was changing.

But the day was not celebrated for the Right to Life in Michigan and those in the anti-abortion camp.

But a changing tide does not sure up the fight. The next battle over abortion access is over the so-called abortion pill, which is likely to be banned by a Texas judge soon, and that would reduce Michigander’s access to that form of abortion care.
