Dearborn police describe what led to fatal shooting, leaving 2 dead, 1 injured inside Fairlane Mall

No suspect in custody

DEARBORN, Mich. – Two people were killed, and a third was injured in a shooting inside Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, prompting a large police response and the temporary closure of the shopping mall.

Dearborn police responded to reports of gunfire on Friday (July 3) around 1:25 p.m. at the mall near Michigan Avenue and Evergreen Road.

Police said three people were shot during the incident.

One person died at the scene, and a second victim died after being taken to a local hospital.

A third person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victims ranged in age from their late teens to early 20s, police said.

Investigators believe all three victims were involved in the incident, which police said began as a dispute between two groups that escalated into gunfire.

Officials emphasized the shooting was not a random act of violence and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

As of Friday afternoon, no suspects were in custody.

Police said investigators are interviewing people of interest and witnesses as they work to determine exactly what happened.

“The safety of our residents and visitors remains our top priority,” Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said in a statement. “Shootings and other acts of violence are entirely unacceptable, and we will hold everyone involved fully accountable.”

Shahin also thanked Dearborn police officers, first responders, and regional and federal law enforcement partners, including the University of Michigan-Dearborn Police Department and the Michigan State Police, for their swift response.

Fairlane Town Center remained closed for several hours Friday while detectives processed the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released the victims’ identities.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Dearborn Police Department at 313-943-2240.
