Parents arrested after Detroit child accidentally shoots himself while playing in bed

4 other children alone in home at the time

A 5-year-old Detroit child died Saturday after accidentally shooting himself with a gun while jumping around in bed, according to Detroit police.

Detroit police chief James White said it happened around 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Greenfield Road.

White said five young children, including the victim, were left home alone and the weapon was left on the dresser.

“(The) 5-year-old gets the weapon, is playing with the weapon, jumping up and down on the bed, turns the gun on himself and shoots himself in the face and died at the scene,” said White.

The parents were taken into police custody and will be charged, according to police.

“The parents about to be locked up,” said White.

Child Protective Services was called to care for the other four children in the house.

“Think about the babies that saw what happened, the trauma that they have to deal with, losing a sibling like this,” said White.

White, who has long preached the importance of responsible gun ownership and parenting, said the parents will be charged with “everything they can”.

White advocates for gun locks and other important gun safety measures.

“I’ve been here how many times saying this, it’s absolutely unacceptable and here’s where were at,” said White.
