DETROIT – A Michigan man is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend while he was dropping off gifts for his children on Christmas Day.

Police said Deandre Patrick Lawrence, 23, of Detroit, went to his ex-girlfriend’s house on Monday, Dec. 25, to deliver gifts to his three children. The woman’s live-in boyfriend was at the house, and the two men got into a physical fight, according to authorities.

The boyfriend fled the house but tripped and fell on the ground, police said. Lawrence followed him and shot him twice in the back while he was lying on the ground, prosecutors said.

Lawrence is charged with assault with intent to murder (a life felony) and a felony firearm violation.

He was arraigned Wednesday at 37th District Court in Warren and given a $1 million bond, cash/surety. If released, he isn’t allowed to have contact with the victim or witnesses.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Jan. 4, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Jan. 11.
