Shelby Township police shoot man believed to have stabbed his mom

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Police in Shelby Township shot a man who they believe stabbed his mother Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Police said they received a 911 call regarding a domestic violence incident at the Shelby Oaks apartment complex at about 6:30 a.m. A conflict between a mother and son reportedly escalated into the son stabbing his mother.

The woman fled to a nearby shopping center, where she called 911.

Kristen Powser, a young mother who has lived at the complex for almost a decade, recalled the chaos she woke up to.

“This morning I woke up out of the blue, saw the police lights, I heard yelling, and then I heard what I thought were gunshots,” said Powser.

Authorities said officers with the Shelby Township Police Department arrived and confronted the suspect, who was still armed with a knife. Police said the man refused to drop the knife and lunged at officers. He was struck by at least one bullet and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

No officers were hurt in the incident.

“It’s scary to have little kids and have stuff like that happen around here,” Powser said.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating to determine if the shooting followed department policy.
