Semi truck fire closes multiple lanes of westbound I-696 Truck believed to be carrying garbage

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. – Multiple lanes of westbound I-696 were closed down Wednesday, Feb. 21, after the contents of a semi truck caught fire.
It happened at about 9:45 a.m. at the border of Madison Heights and Warren. Initially, the westbound entrance ramp from Dequindre Road and all lanes except the left lane were closed , but the entrance ramp reopened shortly after noon .
The contents of the truck were emptied on the shoulder of the freeway so crews could more effectively battle the fire.
No injuries were reported.
