Residents displaced due to crumbling apartment building on Detroit’s east side

DETROIT – The residents of an apartment building on Detroit’s east side have been displaced after the brick walls began to fall.

It’s happening at a building on Gunston Street. Residents said the exterior wall began falling down overnight Wednesday, May 8, and by 6 a.m. Thursday, May 9, a large chunk of the brick facade was in a pile on the ground.

One resident told Local 4 that they had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck by the falling bricks.

The Detroit Fire Department is assessing the damage and is working with city officials to determine if residents need to evacuate.

The owner of the building said they’re putting up residents in a hotel until repairs can be made.
