Free events happening at Detroit parks all summer

Summer program schedule announced May 22

DETROIT – Dozens of parks around the city of Detroit will have free events for residents all throughout the summer.

“Today we’re announcing our full slate of Sumer programs. We’ll be doing programs -- bringing Detroiters to their parks in 24 parks across the city,” said Detroit Parks Coalition executive director, Sigal Hemy.

Five different parks will have literacy and reading programs thanks to a Partnership with the Detroit Public Library. A partnership with the Pistons will make way for a whole lot of sports to play out at many of those parks as well.

“Events like this impact residents in Detroit substantially. It gets them outside recreating, being active, and enjoying their neighborhoods,” said Detroit Parks Coalition Program Director, Yvette Pullombass.

Funding for neighborhood organizations is also coming from the Kresge Foundation. Yoga is another activity you’ll be seeing play out along with an arts festival. Just shows how far we’ve come when the parks didn’t look that great not too long ago.

“In the last few years, Detroit parks have definitely came a long way. A lot of it is in partnership with the parks stewardship organization and everyone from the Chandler Park Conservancy to the friends of Sidewalk Detroit which stewards Eliza Howell. We have all collectively come together to be stewards of the park and to be great partners with the city of Detroit,” Yvette added.

Yoga in the parks will be in several different parks from June 1st to Sep 1st. While the Pistons neighborhood program will be from June 17th through August 16th.

“It’s fun. It’s really great, healthy, family-friendly ways to come out and enjoy your parks. Enjoy your city and enjoy your neighborhood,” Sigal insisted.
