Changes coming to Detroit waste collection

DETROIT – Big changes are coming to the way Detroit’s trash is collected. GFL is out and Priority Waste is in; now taking care of the east side on June 3rd.

“With this enhanced level of service, residents will now be able to put all of their solid waste items out on a weekly basis on the same collection day,” said DPW Director, Ron Brundridge.

Waste management will continue to clean up the westside as they have the past 8 years. But this difference this time around is that Bulk, brush and recycling will now be collected weekly on both sides of town. The new $40 million contract will be in place for five years, but now pick-ups are being expanded in hopes of beautifying the city.

“In passing years, residents couldn’t put out things such as drywall and cabinets on their bulk days. We did not allow them to put our household renovation items in terms of appliances, things like wood cabinets, drywall, tile, etc that you couldn’t put out before - how we’re able to put it out because we wanna make it as easy and convenient as possible for our residents to continue to do the great work they’re doing on their home,” Ron explained.

“Knowing that we will have a weekly pick up, knowing that we will have a certain provider that has heard our needs is phenomenal,” Keisha added.
