DETROIT – An attack on Detroit’s west side left two women badly burned.
Detroit police chief James White said it’s one of the most awful cases he’s ever seen.
It happened as people were arriving at work Monday, Sept. 9, at a business on West Grand Boulevard, near Hubbard Street. A man who quit his job a few weeks ago reportedly was waiting in the parking lot before he attacked two women as they showed up for their job just after 6 a.m.
He allegedly doused the women with gasoline and set them on fire. Authorities believe he was waiting for anyone to show up and the two women were the first to arrive.
Witnesses saw what happened, tackled the man and held him down until authorities could arrive.
The two women were badly burned and rushed to a nearby hospital. They are expected to survive.
“This is absurd and it’s sad,” White said. “Thank goodness the two victims are likely to survive from their injuries -- at least physical injuries. Emotional injuries? Probably not. It’s just horrific.”
