MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. – A 30-year-old accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian with their vehicle in Madison Heights has been arrested and charged, according to police.

The hit-and-run crash happened before 4:53 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, in the area of Southbound Dequindre Road North of 11 Mile Road. Police said Sammie Baker, 67, from Detroit, was walking when he was struck by a vehicle that left the scene of the crash.

Police said Baker was waiting for a bus when a gold Toyota left the road and struck and killed him. Baker was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators have arrested Jalal Salim Safah and recovered the vehicle they said was involved in the crash. Safah was arraigned on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, in the 43rd District Court.

Safah has been charged of leaving the scene of an at-fault accident resulting in death, a 15-year felony. Safah was given a $10,000 bond.
