ST. IGNACE, Mich. – A Metro Detroit man is facing charges after leading police on a chase across the Mackinac Bridge and attempting to carjack a vehicle occupied by a woman and her child, police said.
Jack Maibach, 27, of Northville has been charged with fleeing and eluding, carjacking and resisting and obstructing an officer.
At about 2 p.m. on Monday, May 19, Emmet County deputies alerted St. Ignace police, and other agencies, about a vehicle pursuit that was happening northbound across the Mackinac Bridge.
Deputies had tried to conduct a traffic stop on Maibach’s vehicle for speeding, but he failed to stop, prompting the pursuit.
The Northville man allegedly crashed through a gate arm at the toll booth before he continued traveling northbound in the southbound lane of I-75.
At this point, law enforcement officials briefly lost sight of Maibach’s vehicle, according to police.
Maibach allegedly entered St. Ignace, and police found his vehicle disabled near the entrance of the Mackinac Straits Hospital at 1140 North State Street.
After that, he allegedly tried to carjack a vehicle that a woman and her child were in.
“The woman was able to drive away with the suspect clinging to the outside of her vehicle until he fell off,” police said.
An officer and a trooper found Maibach in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn hotel, and he allegedly “violently resisted arrest” before he was taken into custody with the assistance of two more law enforcement officials.
