Flat Rock community fights to save its historic dam as removal plan looms

Officials want to remove it after a study showed it’s negatively impacting fish travel

FLAT ROCK, Mich. – The future of a historic dam in Flat Rock remains uncertain, but some residents are taking steps to preserve it.

The dam has been a hot topic in this community. Its owner is the Huron-Clinton Metroparks Authority.

They want to remove it after a study showed it’s negatively impacting fish travel.

But residents say its removal would create more problems, like the destruction of more than 250 acres of wetlands. And that’s not all.

“So, a lot of creatures would be lost, and some of them have just come back after years away. Bald eagles have just come back within the last eight to 10 years,” said Flat Rock Safety Dam Coalition Director Brad Booth. We’re just seeing beavers up here in the last five years. So it’s amazing the diversity of animals that live upstream, and we’d be missing all of those."

Residents are hosting an event this Saturday to educate the community about the importance of the dam.

The Save the Dam jam runs from 8 am to 8 pm at Huron Park.
