WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. – A Washtenaw County beach was closed for swimming on Wednesday due to high levels of E. coli in the water.
The Washtenaw County Health Department said the elevated levels of E. coli were detected at Independence Beach during routine testing.

Independence Lake Beach is located at 3200 Jennings Road in Whitmore Lake.
The closure will remain in effect until testing shows that the levels are safe for swimming.
Although the beach is closed for swimming, health officials say it is open to other forms of recreation that don’t involve any body contact with the water, including fishing.
Due to closures like this one, beachgoers are encouraged to check if a beach is open before heading there. People can find the status of public beaches across Michigan on EGLE’s Beachguard website.
