Families of children with disabilities lose critical resource as Beverly Hills respite home closes

The closure will take effect on Sept. 28, 2025

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. – Human service agency Judson Center has made the difficult decision to close its Lahser Children’s Respite Home in Beverly Hills.

The closure will take effect on Sept. 28, 2025.

Since 1986, the home has provided vital respite services for parents and caregivers of children, teens, and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

It has served as a “home away from home” for young people with autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, and other disabilities.

Stays range from one night to several weeks.

The Lahser home was the only respite facility of its kind in Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, and Washtenaw counties.

The closure follows a ruling by the State of Michigan that Judson Center is no longer in compliance with Michigan Public Act 116.

The law prohibits childcare institutions from accepting both adults and minors for care and custody in the same facility.

Nearly 50 families use the Lahser Children’s Respite Home annually.

Judson Center has met with these families and is assisting them in finding alternative respite care options.

The home’s five staff members have been offered other positions within the agency.
