DETROIT – Detroit police have strong leads in a shooting that left one man dead and one man and a woman injured during a post-funeral gathering at a park near Moffatt and Seneca streets Monday night on the city’s east side.
Detroit police Chief Todd Bettison said he’s confident that the people responsible will be arrested and charged soon.
“Multiple people were armed, so it was members in the crowd shooting back and members from the vehicle shooting into the crowd,” said Bettison.
Crime scene investigators recovered 129 shell casings from the scene.
“That’s totally unacceptable,” Bettison said.
Officers had maintained a presence near an earlier funeral service as a precautionary measure, but were unaware of the subsequent gathering where the shooting occurred.
Bettison confirmed the incident appears to be gang-related.
The gunfire spread to a neighboring street.
“We got at least five houses over here on this block that were hit by stray gunfire,” said one resident, who asked to be identified as Mr. G. “It’s very dangerous because my girls sit on the porch.”
Residents emphasized that such violence is uncommon in their neighborhood.
“It usually doesn’t happen over here. That was something that they came over here. Whoever did it, don’t live over here,” one neighbor said, who didn’t want to give his name.
