Man arrested after assault at Planet Fitness, high-speed chase in West Bloomfield

Police received a 911 call regarding a man punching employees inside the gym

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – Video from a neighbor shows the moments West Bloomfield police arrested a man accused of attacking staff at a Planet Fitness and leading officers on a high-speed chase.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 20) at the Planet Fitness off Orchard Lake Road.

Police received a 911 call regarding a man punching employees inside the gym.

West Bloomfield police Deputy Chief Scott Mong stated that the incident began after an argument with staff at the front desk.

“He grabbed a metal object that was part of an exercise machine and was threatening staff and other people with that object and then threw it,” Mong said.

When police arrived, the man had already gotten into his car.

Mong said the man tried to run over an officer while trying to flee the scene.

“Our officer was on foot. He approached the vehicle and ordered him to stop,” Mong said. “He failed to do that, drove toward our officer, striking him.”

That officer got back into his car and tried to block the man from driving off. Mong said the man hit his cruiser and several other police cars, leading police on a high-speed chase down Maple Road before turning into a subdivision.

Video shows the moments when police finally boxed the man’s car in and made an arrest.

Officers deployed tasers several times before pulling the man out of the car and restraining him.

The man is later seen being put into an ambulance, strapped to a gurney.

Mong said West Bloomfield police have sent several charges to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Detective Kozemchak with the department at (248) 975-8999.
