According to authorities, the fire truck was being used to warn drivers to slow down as first responders worked on a rollover crash that was nearly hit by another vehicle.
Fire crews were trying to slow traffic when the truck -- parked on the shoulder with its emergency lights on -- was struck by a Kia. First responders stopped working on the rollover crash to aid the driver of the Kia and the firefighter in the truck.
The Jaws of Life were used to extricate the driver of the Kia, who was taken with the firefighter to an Ann Arbor hospital for treatment.
The firefighter has since been released with no major injuries.
Move Over Law
Michigan’s expanded “Move Over” law took effect back in 2019. It required drivers to slow to 10 mph below the posted speed limit and yield their lane when passing police or emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
