Officials believe the animal got tired and decided the lake was a good place to rest. With the help of passersby, fire officials were able to reunite the sheep with its owner that same day. Shooting threat from student closes Brighton-area school
LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI - A shooting threat from a student has shut down a Brighton-area school. The student sent the threat at 3:08 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, in a text message to another student at Livingston Christian School in Genoa Township, just west of Brighton, according to Michigan State Police. The message sent by the suspected student, a 16-year-old, was, “Tomorrow I’m going to bring a gun to school and kill you, don’t come to school tomorrow,” police said. Upon investigation, the suspected student admitted to sending the threat, police said, though investigators determined the student did not have access to firearms to carry out the threat. The MSP investigation will be forwarded to the Livingston County Prosecutor’s Office to review potential charges.

BRIGHTON, MI — A water-based field for field hockey may soon find its way into Legacy Center Sports Complex, if around $2 million can be raised. The field aims to give all ages, levels and teams a place to play field hockey, GLRFH Executive Director Keely Tamer said, adding this type of water-based field for field hockey is primarily found at universities like the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Central Michigan University. Water-based turf fields, which use a more dense pile surface, are the standard for field hockey. “(Legacy Center’s field is) going to be used by anyone who plays field hockey in the area,” Tamer said. Tamer hopes the field can inspire others to try field hockey.

No one was injured in the incident, Michigan State Police said in a statement. LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – Motorists using U.S. 23 north of Brighton will find it unusable after dark starting Friday for the next month. U.S. 23 near Brighton between Spencer Road and Clyde Road will be shut down nightly starting Friday, June 3, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. as the Michigan Department of Transportation continues its $27 million resurfacing project for the freeway. Resurfacing on this section of U.S. 23 is expected to be completed by June 24 with the entirety of the MDOT project wrapping up by Nov. 4, officials said. During the shutdown, motorist are advised to seek alternative routes, but traffic will be detoured by way of I-96, Spencer Road, Old U.S. 23 and M-59. MDOT noted the improvements will provide increased safety and mobility in this area of U.S. 23, which is a significant local and national trade corridor.

Men in stolen truck try to steal ATM, police say
BRIGHTON, MI – Police are investigating the potential theft of an ATM after a stolen truck crashed into the machine outside a Brighton bank. Police arrived to find a truck had crashed into the guide wires of a power pole at the bank and the ATM had been damaged in an attempt to remove it from the property, police said. Officers later discovered the crashed truck, which was reported stolen, police said. The crash caused power to be briefly knocked out in the area. The Green Oak Township Police Department, Hamburg Township Police Department and the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

BRIGHTON, MI – A man was arrested Thursday night after robbing a Brighton gas station at knifepoint and riding away on a bicycle, police said. Police were called at 7:30 p.m. May 5, to the Marathon Gas station at 8355 W. Grand River Ave. for a reported armed robbery that had just occurred. The station clerk told officers a man entered the gas station, pulled out a knife and demanded cash from the register, according to the Brighton Police Department. After being handed an undisclosed amount of cash, the man left the gas station fleeing on a bicycle, police said. A police K9 unit called to the area tracked the suspect to a nearby PetSmart, 8537 W. Grand River Ave., where he admitted to robbing the gas station and still had the money in his pocket, police said.

Livingston County Judge Michael Hatty set a Dec. 12 trial date in a case filed against Asahi Kasei Plastics North America, (APNA), by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. The trial date was previously pushed from June to September. Detroit Catholic Central 3-peated as Division 1 state hockey champion by beating Brighton 5-1 Saturday at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth. The Shamrocks also won D1 crowns in 2019 and last season – the 2020 tournament was canceled because of COVID-19 – and they’ve won 15 championships dating back to 1994.

Grandville’s bid for a state hockey championship came to an end Friday night – one game shy of the tile game. The Bulldogs suffered a 4-1 loss to Brighton in the Division 1 state semifinal at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, ending Grandville’s season at 20-8-1. Brighton will play Detroit Catholic Central in today’s 7 p.m. state championship game, also in Plymouth. Gavin Rozema scored Grandville’s lone goal in the third. Brighton’s Levi Pennal and Grandville Anne Beck recorded 18 saves each.

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – A Brighton man will spend the next decade in prison and the rest of his life registering as a sex offender for repeatedly sexually assaulting children. Francis Winegarden II was sentenced Thursday, Feb. 10, to 10-20 years in prison and a lifetime of electronic monitoring as a sex offender for charges of sexual assault and incest of a child younger than 13, according to the Michigan Attorney General’s Office.

His bond was set at $1 million, records show. FLINT, MI -- One person is dead and three are in critical condition after an argument that started on a bus traveling from Brighton to Flint escalated into shots fired and a vehicle pursuit ending in a crash, according to police. An argument between a group of women began on a bus in Brighton as the group returned to Flint Monday, Dec. 13, Flint Police Chief Terence Green told MLive-The Flint. The Pontiac overturned a few blocks north on Harrison Street, north of Kearsley Street, near the University of Michigan-Flint’s campus. One victim has been confirmed deceased, with three others in critical condition, according to an email from the Flint Police Department. FLINT – Jordan Huhn scored 15 points, Joey Siegle had 12 points and Reese Forgie added 11 for Byron Friday in a 61-16 girls basketball victory over Brighton Charyl Stockwell Academy. Forgie also had 12 rebounds, five steals and four assists for Byron while Huhn added seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. Ashley Nixon chipped in seven rebounds for Byron, which was playing its first game of the season. Byron, which also got eight points from Kierra Conlen, led 10-1 after the first quarter and 31-5 at halftime. Raven Guy led Carman-Ainsworth with 20 points.
