ROMEO, Mich. – Spooky season is here, and downtown Romeo is trying to set a world record for the largest gathering of witches and warlocks Oct. 25.

“The current record is 1607 people which happened in Sort, Spain in 2013,” said Romeo Downtown Development Authority Director Kay Pochert told Macomb Daily. “Our annual downtown trick-or-treat event typically draws between 1,500 and 2,000 people so we added Witches and Warlocks Return to Romeo as a way of attracting more people to Romeo’s downtown.

To be counted toward the world record, participants must only be dressed like a witch. Black pointed hats, black cloaks or dresses, and a broomstick – either real or a prop are required to be deemed a witch or warlock.

There will be events including a broomstick race and Thriller dance competition. There will also be a vendor market area with unique holiday and gift items.

Trick-or-treating runs from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and from 1-5 p.m. the witches can gather.

“The official count is going to be taken between 4 and 4:10 p.m.,” said Pochert. “This is one of the largest events we have ever put on in our downtown and we are really excited about it.”

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel will emcee the event and will be declaring Romeo as the official Halloween town in Macomb County.
