LINCOLN PARK, Mich. – A Saturday night that started with a Detroit police Officer going out for a beer and ended up facing multiple felonies.
The 34-year-old Detroit police officer was arrested in Lincoln Park and is facing charges for home invasion and resisting arrest.
The incident happened just before 11 p.m. last Saturday (Sept. 27) night.
According to the police report, Shane Mykel Shaw showed up at the neighbor’s home on the 1700 block of Gregory Avenue in Lincoln Park and demanded that the family move their car because it was blocking the sidewalk.
Shaw says he was riding his bicycle to get beer when he happened to ride upon their house.
The family, which consisted of three men and a 59-year-old woman, said that they had never seen Shaw before.
One of the family members said he smelled like alcohol and yelled at him to leave.
The report states that Shaw told the family they had to follow his orders because “he is a cop.”
After the argument intensified, Shaw stormed into the house and began fighting with one of the men as another family member called the police.
By the time Lincoln Park police arrived, both men were brawling on the kitchen floor.
Shaw was taken into custody.
He initially refused to get into the squad car, which resulted in an additional charge before he spent the night in jail.
In an interview with police on Sunday morning, Shaw claimed that he was simply trying to prevent the family from receiving a ticket for illegal parking – as had happened to him before – and that the family was the aggressor, which led to his being pulled into the home.
Shaw, who had no prior criminal record, was arraigned in 25th District Court on Monday and is facing charges of first-degree home invasion, along with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer – all of which are felonies.
DPD says that Shaw has been suspended with pay.
However, they have begun the process to remove his pay.
“The Detroit Police Department’s internal affairs has opened an investigation into this matter,” Commander Michael McGinnis said in a statement. “We will stay true to the department’s commitment to hold its members accountable for their actions if found guilty.”
Shaw’s bond is set at $25,000, and he is currently out on an electronic tether.
He has a probable cause hearing scheduled for next Tuesday, Oct. 7.
