Deadly stabbing at Southgate Kroger ruled self-defense, prosecutors say

2 men had known each other

SOUTHGATE, Mich. – A 33-year-old man from Riverview will not be charged in the deadly stabbing of a 23-year-old man at a Southgate Kroger.

It happened Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Kroger store on Fort Street. First responders arrived at about 3 p.m. and found Ramon Vazquez, who had been stabbed twice.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

According to authorities, Vazquez and Charles Hinton knew of each other but had not met in person. Vazquez reportedly came into the store and began punching Hinton, who produced a knife and stabbed him twice.

Hinton remained at the scene.

Prosecutors said Hinton acted in lawful self-defense and will not be charged in Vazquez’s death.

Hinton has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Authorities said he was illegally carrying the knife on him at the time of the assault.

He is expected to be arraigned Saturday, Oct. 11.
