DETROIT – It’s no secret that the holidays are magical in Detroit.
Local 4 spent Christmas Eve finding out how people in the city are gearing up for the big day.
“Brought my camera,” Milton Laneer said.
“And what are you taking pictures of?” Local 4 asked.
“Everything I can,” Laneer said.
Local 4 caught up with Laneer right off Woodward Avenue on Christmas Eve.
He hasn’t been downtown during Christmas in over 20 years.
He was so stunned by the hustle and bustle that he brought out his camera to document the last-minute shopping, dining, and music.
“It’s cool,” shopper Nick Warren said. “A lot of places that you can walk around and enjoy. It’s solid.”
Warren is just one of the people Local 4 spoke to while out grabbing their final gifts.
Others were out enjoying the sights, all while they waited to see what was under the tree.
“Power Ranger robot and I want new shoes,” one kid said.
“A firetruck,” another said.
“I want like a lot of clothing and some jeans from PacSun,” one said.
Some have their sights set on Santa, but another big crowd is jetting off on their own last-minute journey from DTW.
“Going to see our grandchildren and my sons and ‘daughters in love,’” Amiro Russo, of Rochester, said.
Christmas Eve was smooth at the airport, with only a few cancellations.
That’s good news for the Russos. They are hoping to make their flight to Marco Island to see their kids and grandchildren.
They had just a little luggage loaded.
“What is in these bags?” Local 4 asked.
“Presents, presents, presents, presents,” Russo said.
While they catch a flight, others in metro Detroit are banking on billions.
“Powerball tickets. Eight,” Curtis Harris said.
Whatever it is, there’s something for everyone.
