Body found in river during search for missing Dearborn Heights man

Search effort called off, investigation underway

Police found a body in the river at Hines Park while searching for a 30-year-old missing man with autism.

A multi-jurisdiction search for Yousif Hassan Naim was underway on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, when a body was found.

Naim was last seen at about 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 7 near Warren and Ann Arbor Trail in Dearborn Heights.

At about 3 p.m. on Thursday, a Dearborn drone located a heat signature in the Rouge River near Hines Park, in the area of Outer Drive and Hines Drive.

Units responded, and a body was recovered from the water.

“At this time, the individual has not been officially identified; however, the body appears to match the description of the person involved. We are awaiting further confirmation from the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office,” according to a release from the department. “The search effort has since been called off, but the investigation remains ongoing.”

You can hear everything the police chief said in the video below:

“So, I spoke with the family; obviously, they’re very upset,” Guzowski said. They’ve expressed their gratitude to us for the effort that we put in, and we will make sure we take care of this family.”

The chief said they will assign the family an advocate from the department, and they will “continue to support the family throughout this process.”

“This is an extremely tragic situation; it happens all too often,” Guzowski said. “Obviously, mental health treatment in this country is a lot to be desired.”

He said that officers go through training for “this type of incident,” and the department is always working to get more resources “to prevent these types of things from happening.” When asked, the chief clarified that there was “no indication that this person was in crisis.”

Over 200 volunteers had joined officers, firefighters and city personnel in searching the area.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time. While the outcome was certainly tragic, I am heartened by the massive community turnout of residents, employees, police officers, firefighters and neighboring law enforcement agencies who stepped up to help with the search,” said Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun.

This comes two days after Baydoun announced that Guzowski had been appointed as the city’s new police chief.
