Authorities arrived and found the horses trapped in the water.

The horses had wandered away from their enclosure and onto the icy pond, according to the sheriff’s office. The frozen pond then gave way, leaving the horses stranded in the shallow water.

Calhoun County Area Law Enforcement Underwater Rescue Team (ALURT) divers, with assistance from Burlington, Leroy, Newton Township and Union City firefighters, worked together to remove each horse from the pond.

The coordinated efforts ensured all four animals were safely brought to shore, the sheriff’s office said.

Following the rescue, the horses were able to walk away and receive any necessary medical attention. No injuries were reported among the emergency responders.

“The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office commends the quick action and teamwork demonstrated by all responding agencies, including Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority personnel, whose coordination played a critical role in the successful outcome of this rescue,” the sheriff’s office said.
