Don’t fall for it: Monroe County sheriff warns residents of phone scam impersonating law enforcement

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough is alerting the public to a telephone scam targeting Monroe County residents.

On Friday, Feb. 6, 2026, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received multiple reports of a scam in which an unknown individual called claiming to be a law enforcement officer.

The caller identified himself as “Lieutenant Quinn of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office” and falsely told victims they had outstanding warrants, missed jury duty, or failed to appear in court.

One phone number used by the scammer was 734-436-5286.

Calls may also appear as blocked numbers.

Scammers use fear of immediate arrest to pressure victims into sending payments, often requesting money via gift cards or other electronic methods.

Goodnough urges residents to remain vigilant and offers guidance on handling suspicious calls.

Sheriff Goodnough reminded residents that law enforcement will not call and demand money under threat of arrest.

Residents outside Monroe County should contact their local police department or sheriff’s office.
