1 killed, 1 injured in wrong-way crash in Washtenaw County, police say

58-year-old Brighton man killed, 26-year-old Montrose man hurt

NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A man was killed, and another was injured in a wrong-way crash in Washtenaw County on Sunday morning, police said.

At about 6:15 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026, troopers responded to northbound US-23 at Territorial Road in Northfield Township after receiving a report of a crash.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a 58-year-old Brighton man in a 1993 Jeep Cherokee was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of US-23. The driver hit a northbound 2009 Chevrolet Silverado that was being driven by a 26-year-old Montrose man, according to Michigan State Police.

Both men were taken to the hospital, where the 58-year-old Jeep driver was pronounced dead.

The 26-year-old was treated for minor injuries, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police said it is currently unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
