Temple Israel recovery efforts continue after violent attack

Community grapples with aftermath of attack, heightened security measures

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – Five days after the violent attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, recovery efforts are still underway -- and temple leaders say it will take time to fully restore operations.

Rabbi Josh Bennett said the temple’s leadership team has decided to cancel all programs until April 2, a move he said is intended to help the congregation get through the Passover holiday while repairs and planning continue. In the meantime, he said Temple Israel remains resilient as it works to restore facilities and keep the community informed.

Outside the temple, there is still a noticeable police presence along with increased security measures. On campus, disaster response vehicles remain in place and crews have been using alternative lighting to continue initial repair work.

Neighbor Larry Binder, who lives nearby, said the attack has been difficult to process.

“It was frightening,” Binder said, describing the area as typically quiet and never expecting the temple would become a target -- especially with more than 140 children and staff members inside at the time.

“It’s terrible. The hatred,” he added.

Binder said he understands the building sustained significant water damage after sprinklers activated.

“I understand they had a lot of water damage. Their sprinklers went off,” Binder said.

Temple Israel has been using social media to provide updates, including guidance on programming plans and next steps. While earlier messaging indicated programs would resume Tuesday, Bennett said leadership is continuing to evaluate options and prioritize safety and continuity for key services.

Bennett told Local 4 that temple leaders are still searching for alternate locations for the office, the early childhood center, and the religious school as restoration work continues. He said the goal is to return to normal operations as soon as possible.

For Binder and others in the surrounding community, the days since the attack have been filled with uncertainty -- and a heightened sense of caution.

“You just keep watchful and careful,” Binder said.
