Five bald eagles have been found dead over a two-week span, and Michigan officials are trying to figure out what happened.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said the eagles were found dead between April 3 and April 17 in the Upper Peninsula’s Garden Peninsula. That’s a piece of land that extends south from Delta County between Big Bay de Noc and Lake Michigan.

Officials are asking the public for help in their investigation. They said the eagles didn’t die from natural causes, predators, or car crashes.

Eagles are a state and federally protected species. Killing an eagle can result in a 90-day misdemeanor and fines.

If someone provides information that leads to an arrest and prosecution, they might be eligible for a cash reward, DNR officials said.

Anyone with information is asked to call or text the DNR’s Report All Poaching Hotline at 800-292-7800. You can remain anonymous.

The United States Fish and Wildlife Services, as well as local tribes, are helping the DNR with this investigation.
