OSCODA COUNTY, Mich. – Officials said the Mapes Fire is now 100% contained after crews established a secure, cold perimeter around the entire wildfire.
The update, given on Thursday (May 7), is the final planned daily report for the fire, though information will continue to be posted on InciWeb in the coming days.
Despite cooler temperatures, fire officials warned that wildfire danger remains elevated across the Huron National Forest because the region has not received significant rainfall in nearly two weeks.
Officials said dry forest fuels, combined with afternoon winds and low relative humidity, are expected through the rest of the week and could still support active fire behavior.
Residents opening seasonal cabins and people recreating outdoors are urged to make fire prevention a top priority.
Evacuations began Monday (May 3) for residents along Camp 10 Road after authorities warned of unsafe wildfire conditions near the river.
Residents in the affected area were instructed to leave immediately and follow directions from emergency crews.
A shelter was initially established at the community center in Mio before being later moved to Tri-Point Church.
During the fire response, officials said the sheriff’s office temporarily lost power and was unable to receive phone calls.
Service has since been restored.
