Huntington Place arson suspect arrested after viewer tips police

Investigators said the suspect was identified after surveillance images and case details were shared publicly

DETROIT – The man accused of setting a fire inside Huntington Place has been arrested after a viewer recognized him from news coverage and alerted authorities, according to the Detroit Police Department.

A vigilant person who saw the story on the news contacted authorities after spotting the man, leading to his arrest.

Officials said the incident occurred on April 28, just before 9 a.m. at Huntington Place in downtown Detroit.

Investigators said surveillance video showed the man entering the convention center, pouring gasoline onto the carpet near an exit, and then igniting the fuel before leaving the building.

The fire was quickly extinguished and caused minimal damage, according to officials.

No injuries were reported.

Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s name or possible charges.

The investigation remains ongoing.
