Roughly 60 percent of road and bridge projects across the state will be suspended over Memorial Day weekend to help ease traffic congestion for holiday travel, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office announced Thursday.
From 3 p.m. Friday, May 22, through 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, orange construction barrels will be removed and lane restrictions lifted for 100 out of 168 Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects statewide.

More than 1.3 million Michigan residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend, AAA reports — the second highest estimate since AAA started tracking holiday traffic. Travelers are urged to drive cautiously through road construction zones whether or not they’re active, as some equipment, traffic shifts and shoulder closures will remain in place.
“While we’ve been able to pull back the barrels as much as we can for this kickoff to the busy America 250 summer travel season, some work zones must remain in place," said State Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich, in a statement. “For everyone’s safety, including motorists and road workers, we implore all drivers to be patient in work zones and follow all posted signs in those work zones.”
