The annual event is considered a season opener for Midwest mountain biking, with activities for experienced riders as well as novices and families. SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI — Summertime attendance at Saginaw County-managed parks quadrupled in the last eight years, officials said. Brian Keenan-Lechel, director of Saginaw County Parks and Recreation, said the county surpassed a significant milestone Tuesday, Aug. 30, when staff recorded the 100,000th vehicle entering the parks since Memorial Day. The six-figure landmark represents an all-time attendance record for the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, he said. The decision was followed by exponential usage at the two county-operated parks in Saginaw Township, William H. Haithco Recreation Area and Imerman Memorial Park. Of the 100,000 vehicles that entered Saginaw County parks since Memorial Day, about 90,000 were driven by Saginaw County residents, he said.

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI — A new, $900,000 splash pad and playground likely played a role in the largest single-day turnout of visitors in Haithco Park in at least a decade, officials said. On Memorial Day — Monday, May 30 — more than 800 vehicles drove through the entrance gates of the county-operated, Saginaw Township-based park. Memorial Day 2022 arrived four days after officials opened the splash pad and playground for the first time ever. By late afternoon, about 50 people — mostly children — gathered and played at the splash pad and playground at the same time. For now, operators must manually designate where the water spouts within the splash pad setup, which features plastic Michigan-native animals and trees that project water.

DETROIT – A Detroit man is charged with murder in the hit-and-run death of a 12-year-old girl who was walking with her sister along the beach on Belle Isle over Memorial Day weekend, officials said. Alexander Armond Smith, 23, of Detroit, is charged in connection with the crash that killed Gadir Saleh, 12, and injured her 16-year-old sister, both of Dearborn, on Monday, May 30, on Detroit’s Belle Isle, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced. DETROIT -- The 12-year-old girl who was died after being hit by a car on Belle Isle had only been in the United States for few months before she was struck by a driver. According to Fox 2 Detroit, Gadir Saleh and her family had moved to the U.S. recently after leaving Yemen and were celebrating Memorial Day for the first time on Belle Isle. Saleh and her 14-year-old sister were on the beach Monday when a 23-year-old Ypsilanti man left the roadway, drove onto the beach and hit the children. Both the children were injured in the incident and Saleh died the following day as a result of her injuries. The 14-year-old sister is expected to recover.

Crews from the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, Bear Lake Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, and Michigan State Police have been searching for Zielinski since he jumped out of a boat to go swimming, began to struggle and sunk below the water around 5 p.m. on May 29. Local boaters attempted to find the missing man but were unsuccessful, police said. Additional information is pending examination by the Manistee County Medical Examiner.

That same day, a 39-year-old Ohio man died after he fell off of a tube he was riding on with his daughter. A human chain was formed to locate the girl and she was eventually pulled from the water. Along with those four drowning, four people needed rescuing on Lake Michigan at Grand Haven State Park on Monday. However, two of the people in the chain began struggling themselves and needed to be saved.
