DETROIT, – Spirit Plaza is reopening for the season after nearly $2.9 million renovation project.
The plaza is a community space centered around the Spirit of Detroit statue.

The space was first established in 2017 and originally meant to be temporary.
Construction of Spirit Plaza renovation began in Oct. of 2025.
The plaza layout is remains the same with more permanent features.
The renovations brought a new covered stage, playground, turf surface and more seating.
The play area was intentionally made to be a space for youth of all ability.
The surface of the rubber and turf is made to make traveling easier for anyone using a mobility aide, the merry go round is wheelchair-accessible and the tower can be climbed or crawled up.
The plaza will reopen on June 6.
A grand reopening celebration at the plaza from from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 6.
The event will include DJs, fitness classes, food trucks, resource tables, inflatables, and a gaming truck.
Returning to the plaza
- Yin Nights with Trap Yoga and Massage Studio every Wednesday at 8:15 p.m.
- Dancing in the D with DJ Roc Wit Moe every Friday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
- Variety of food trucks will be at the plaza weekdays 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Seating and tables will be placed in the plaza once the programming season begins on June 6.
During the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, May 29-May 31, Spirit Plaza will be activated and a pedestrian bridge will go from Hart Plaza to Spirit Plaza.
Spirit Plaza programming is facilitated by Detroit family business, Total Access Events Inc.
Construction for the plaza was done by Michigan Recreational Construction.
“Spirit Plaza is a place for all Detroiters, whether it’s to sit and enjoy lunch, take part in the diverse programming or join fellow Detroiters to voice support for a cause they support,” said Mayor Mary Sheffield.
