Detroit fire, police launch separate investigations after man’s body discovered inside burning home

Authorities seek cause of blaze as community reacts with shock

DETROIT – A man was found dead Thursday morning inside a home on Longview Street after firefighters responded to a call for a house fire.

The Detroit Fire Department said it received a call about a house fire shortly before 10 a.m., May 28. When a battalion chief arrived on scene, a family member told the chief someone might be inside the home.

The chief entered through the back of the house, passing a small kitchen fire, and discovered the man dead inside.

The fire department is working to determine the cause of the fire, while Detroit police are investigating the man’s death.

Local 4 spoke with neighbors on the street about this incident, many saying they were alarmed by the heavy emergency response.

“It’s no good feeling, I tell you that,” said Robert, who lives in the neighborhood. He said he knew something was wrong when first responders flooded the street.

“It really surprised me,” Robert said. “It really surprised me because fire trucks, EMS, police. It was a lot.”

While first responders worked the scene, emotions ran high among family members gathered outside the home. At many points, a woman could be heard sobbing.

Several neighbors said they did not personally know the family living in the house but offered their sympathy.

“It’s sad what happened,” Robert said.

Detroit Fire said it is unclear how long it will take to determine the cause of the fire, noting that the timeline can vary. The cause of the man’s death has not been released.
