DETROIT – Girls’ flag football is surging across Metro Detroit — and Wild Child Athletics wants to make sure more girls can try it, stick with it, and see where it can take them.
Next week, the organization is hosting its Girls Flag Football Take Over at Tom Adams Field at Wayne State University on Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 6–8:15 p.m.
The event is designed to be more than a workout: it’s a chance for girls to run flag football stations, meet women athletes and leaders, and build confidence in a space made for them.
That “try it” mindset is exactly what’s motivating Aubrey Kirby, an incoming first grader who’s already picturing herself making plays.
“I want to try it because I think I will be really good at it,” she said. “I think I’m really fast because I’ve done track a lot.”
It’s the kind of enthusiasm Wild Child Athletics founder Candice Davis Price hopes to spark — especially for girls who may be stepping onto a field for the first time.
For older athletes like Audrey King, a junior, flag football can also open doors beyond the game.
“I think somebody should show up because it gives them the opportunity for many more doors,” King said. “There’s more scholarships coming into the USA, and it’s such a good opportunity to get your name out there, get some experience before you know this is something you want to do.”
Candice Davis Price says the event is built to feel welcoming — and memorable.
“These girls are going to walk away with giveaways, swag, we’ve got photobooths — it’s going to be more of an experience,” she said. “They’re each going to walk away with a customized jersey and a sports bra because that is an essential piece of equipment.”
Wild Child Athletics has been growing its mission to empower young girls through sports, confidence-building, and community.
For the athletes and leaders involved, the goal is simple: create a place where girls can play, compete, and shine.
