DETROIT – The car that crashed through a fence and landed on top of other vehicles in a residential neighborhood on Detroit’s west side was fleeing from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency said.
The crash happened at about noon on Thursday, June 4, near the intersection of Warwick Street and Whitlock Avenue.
Neighbors said law enforcement was chasing the vehicle before it broke through a fence, struck a decorative wishing well, and came to rest on top of two parked cars in a home’s driveway.
The driver was impaled through the chest with a metal fence post.
Video obtained from a neighbor shows firefighters rescuing the driver from the smashed car shortly after the crash, then placing the driver on a stretcher with the metal pole still protruding from the chest.
On Friday, June 5, a representative for ICE said it started when they attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle, which reportedly sped up and struck three government vehicles, pinning an officer’s leg in a car door.
The driver reportedly lost control, drove through a fence, hit a garage and came to a stop on two vehicles in a home’s driveway.
The officer was also taken to a hospital for treatment.
The investigation is ongoing.
