Chesterfield police seek public’s assistance in locating injured driver after crash

Evidence at the scene suggests the driver was seriously injured, according to investigators.

CHESTERFIELD TWP. – Police is Chesterfield Township are asking for help in locating a 32-year-old man who reportedly walked away from the scene of a crash that left his vehicle engulfed in flames on Monday night.

Upon receiving a 911 call from a motorist on I-94 about a vehicle on fire in a field near 25 Mile Road and New Haven Road, police arrived around 11:05 p.m. to find a crashed SUV fully engulfed and a trail of blood leading northeast from the vehicle.

The Chesterfield Township Fire Department extinguished the fire and assisted police and the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit in conducting an extensive search of the surrounding area, but were unable to locate the injured driver.

Evidence at the scene suggests the driver — believed to be Nicholas Popp, of Chesterfield Township — was seriously injured in the crash, raising concerns for his safety, according to investigators.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts or about the crash is asked to reach out to the police department at 586-949-2322.

An investigation remains ongoing.
