DETROIT – The former Cooley High School building on the northwest side of Detroit was broken into over the weekend, Detroit Public Schools Community District officials reported Sunday night.
A large section of fence that was installed to protect the shuttered school until its impending demolition was reportedly broken, along with the seal protecting the entrance from unauthorized entry.

The district says the fence has been repaired and the school building will now have 24-hour security on the premises until the demolition is complete.
The historic school, which first opened its doors nearly 100 years ago in 1928, is being demolished to make way for the construction of a new sports complex, despite backlash from some community members.
School officials are reminding the public that the building remains closed to the public and any unauthorized entry into the school building risk prosecution for trespassing.
