MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A suspect is dead following a deputy shooting Thursday in Macomb County.
The incident began around noon when the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office received information from the Chesterfield Township Police Department about a suspect wanted on felonious assault and fleeing and eluding charges. Chesterfield Township police also indicated the suspect may have been armed and possibly experiencing a mental health crisis.
When Macomb County deputies first made contact with the suspect, officials say the individual did not cooperate and backed a vehicle into a patrol motorcycle. That’s when a deputy fired their weapon.
The suspect then drove away westbound on 26 Mile Road, with deputies following close behind. A short time later, the suspect stopped the vehicle, got out with a weapon and charged toward deputies. A deputy fired again. It is unclear at this time whether it was the same deputy involved in both shootings.
The suspect did not survive.
Neighbor reacts to shooting
Michelle Koppes has lived in the Chesterfield area for more than 30 years and said she was still in shock that the incident unfolded on a road she travels regularly.
“I lived in Chesterfield for over 30 years and you get little things here and there but nothing like police chases,” Koppes said.
She also expressed gratitude for law enforcement.
“Every day they have to worry when they pull someone over, or chase, or anything like that. I thank the police. I would never do that job. I could never do that job,” she said.
Investigation underway
Because this is an officer-involved shooting, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation.
