“It helped me with the down payment and it was a lot that I couldn’t afford,” Gibson said.
The grandmother now lives at 7 mile and Algonac on the city’s east side.
She says when her rent was about to go up, she started thinking about home ownership.
“I had to get a lender and meet the requirements. I had to take a first-time homeowner class and I had to have fairly decent credit,” Gibson said.
The Detroit Homebuyers Fair helps people get mortgage-ready and gets them familiar with down-payment assistance programs.
“The services include pulling credit counseling, helping them with a mortgage and taking the fear out,” said Dina Harris, the CEO and founder of National Faith Homebuyers Program.
From banks to lenders, to realtors and housing counselors, the goal is to help Detroiters build generational wealth.
“It changes their mindset, it strengthens who they are and gives them a solid foundation,” Harris said.
“It’s a good feeling to own your home, it’s a really good feeling,” Gibson added.
